Adaptive Cognition was an immersive art installation commissioned by Microsoft and City & Guilds to create an abstract audiovisual journey inspired by the process of learning (and the new affordances of cloud based education platforms). The installation allowed the visitor to physically reach out into a seemingly infinite horizon and surf through a sequence of algorithmically generated data landscapes (piloted using a hand tracking camera). As the user flies through this field of information, the landscape would slowly transition from hard monochrome 'data' aesthetics towards more organic and fluid streams of image and colour emulating the experience of aquiring knowledge. This culminates in a moment of 'enlightenment' when the horizon warps and folds into itself, seemingly encapsulating the infinite landscape into a sphere. The installation software was built using C++ and OpenGL using the Cinder framework.
